Pocohontas' English Clothing
|
| |
Janet constructed Pocohontas' English chemise and apron from
vintage linen sheets and tablecloths. The white linen was first dyed to darker colors to accomodate the high resolution
film stock and the film's 'look' and then cut into a chemise and apron. The two pieces were sewn using a combination
of hand and machine techniques. Note the hand sewn cartridge pleats in the apron.

Creation for Renaissance Magazine.

Pocohontas' English Skirt
|
| |
Originally a grey with red overtones, this pleated skirt was overdyed
to a grey with green overtones using an airbrush. This airbrush technique gave the skirt an hombred effect when
finished, darker at the hem and lighter at the waistband, which suggested accumulated grime.
Airbrush techniques were used on several
costume pieces.

English Colonists' Shirts

|
Shirts, chemises, partlets and caps had to be dyed to darker shades to accomodate
the high resolution film stock and 'look' of the production. Often rainwater was collected and used for dyeing in tin
washtubs over a gas ring. Clotheslines strung between trees and spare wardobe racks accommodated the drying clothes.
Portion of the 72 shirts that were
dyed in one work day.
